1. Judging Question Time / Clubs Q&A
There is a lot of work going on in the Advisory Team at the moment.
So we are proposing a further Clubs Q&A online on Tuesday 14 March. This would be for me to brief you, and an opportunity for you to talk to us about any judging / appraisal matters that interest or concern you.
Please would clubs nominate a Rep and advise me a) of intent to join and b) any advance questions. It would be helpful for all clubs to attend if you can.
Details of the Zoom meeting will be sent roughly two days in advance to Reps who have confirmed intention to attend.
Among the topics we’re discussing are:
- Titles – the use of Titles with competition images;
- Political / Social Sensitivity – how do we respond to challenging, controversial or potentially upsetting subject matter;
- Own work – in addition to what we have already put out relating to Workshop images, what is the view on images produced by AI / CGI or made remotely?
- Genre definitions – we are aiming to help clubs and judges alike to be on the same page when it comes to Set Theme or Genre ‘competitions’ by drawing up some broad definitions. What is clubs’ view?
- Peer Appraisal – to what extent are you moving away from marks towards critique only or more interactive, discussion based approaches to image appraisal?

2. New Training
We are intending a new training course for appraisers (judges) in the near future. Please would clubs put out a call to all their members to invite expressions of interest. Those who have already expressed an interest have been contacted already.
For reference, there is information on the SCPF website about “Becoming a Judge”, and I am always happy to discuss one-to-one with anyone interested.
