At the SCPF Reps Meeting on 8th September we introduced two Judging Guidance Papers, which have been produced as a result of the Judges Forum in March 2020. The two topics concern ‘Marking and Marking Ranges‘, and ‘Appraising Workshop Images‘. The papers are now available for download as PDFs on this post.
The guidance was agreed in principle by the judging community at the forum, and subsequently developed by myself in conjunction with our Judging Advisory team. All judges have had the opportunity to comment and there is broad agreement. Nonetheless, we would value clubs’ feedback and the opportunity to improve on the guidance to ensure best practice.
The papers are detailed – they give both the background and the ways forward. But please do read them carefully, and also share and discuss the guidance with your members.

Marking and Marking Ranges
The issue of Marking Ranges arises out of your club feedback to us. Marking range, being typically too narrow, has been the second most criticised aspect of judging. As a result we have clarified the normal ranges that we now guide our judges to adopt for different classes – 6 to 10 for advanced classes. We have also defined four bands within that range to provide clarity.
It is important to understand a) that we advise continuing to mark relatively, meaning that both the low end and the high end of the normal range should be used, and b) that an image scoring low or in the mid-ranges may be technically competent i.e. there is nothing ‘wrong’, just that may be less expressive relative to the higher scoring images in that competition.
Please note that this is not mandatory for clubs; if you wish to use a different marking system for your members, or indeed not to use marking at all, then of course you may do so. Judges are still recommended to talk to you, to understand your requirements and to work with you. However, it would be advantageous for as many clubs as possible to adopt this alongside the judges, so that we are all on the same page and become familiar with the definitions and practice.
Appraising Workshop Images
This issue was raised by a member club after serious disquiet about the entry into competition of images made on workshops, on the grounds that they might not be entirely the photographer’s own work. The matter has also been discussed by the PAGB in their E-News, and similar matters legislated by other bodies such as the PSA.
Our conclusion as a judging community is that we cannot differentiate an image solely on the basis that is may have been made under workshop conditions. Instead we will continue to appraise all images on technical, craft and expressive quality. We will assume that all images presented to us for appraisal are eligible. We also recommend that clubs consider whether images made at workshop-type events should be permitted into your competitions, based on the question: ‘To what extent is this image the photographer’s own work?
